El País Semanal Covers
A different, intelligent and daring way of sharing news
The design of El País Semanal marked a before and after in the story of Solo. It was an ambitious project, in close collaboration with a talented team of professionals. The excellent working relationship during the project led to the idea of an artistic covers direction, which we are thrilled to see continuing in the long term.
The aim is to create iconic and memorable covers, establishing a unique identity for El País Semanal. A fair proposal, we thought. Aside from using the magazine's signature typography and keeping the header in black and white, the work surface was a blank canvas on which to tell each of the articles chosen by the editorial team in the best possible way.
The initial proposal seemed logical. It involved using photography, providing it was of extraordinary quality, and using the title to reinforce the impact of the image. With articles where we thought photography was not the best solution, we were given access to a wide range of options, including illustration, typography and graphic concepts. Working this way, on a weekly basis the El País Semanal covers became platforms through which to spark and explore reader curiosity, to surprise and to create powerful images.
We worked on the premise that big stories deserved big covers to be told properly.
