Gargalo
Monterrey Castle as the foundations of a new identity
Roberto Verino is thought of by many as a pioneer. Not only for having led the way in the Spanish fashion industry, which years later would enjoy extraordinary growth, but also for being a prophet in his own land. In Verín, Ourense, the Galician designer founded the Gargalo vineyard, giving new life to several varieties of local grapes that had been forgotten for many years, to produce some very high-quality wines.
Gargalo is located at the foot of Monterrey Castle, on the south-facing side of the hill on which the castle stands, and is surrounded by 8 hectares of vines. It boasts one of the most unique and privileged locations of all vineyards in the area. This location played a central role in developing the vineyard's new identity, focusing on the sloping angle of the hill and its effect on building a vineyard on such steep terrain. The cut of the initial "G" of Gargalo instantly brings to mind this exceptional hillside and the surrounding landscape.
The graphic system was developed around this idea and extended to different formats and graphic solutions. A range of techniques were used such as drop caps, carefully positioned text boxes and the concentrated use of ink to repeat the motif of Gargalo's unique incline, in a consistent yet varied way.
